The Power of Consistency
The Importance of Consistent Effort
Good afternoon, everybody. My name is Dan Gazaway, your mental performance coach. Today, I'm going to talk about a principle that can transform your life: consistency.
One of my good friends, Mark Walker, has interacted with many entrepreneurs throughout his life. We used to share the stage together at a company, and we often talked about consistency. Mark once said something that has stuck with me over time: "Consistent effort over time will always give you the results that you're looking for." This principle is something I teach repeatedly because it is fundamental to achieving greatness in any pursuit. Whether it's going to the gym, eating healthy, or pursuing a career goal, consistent effort is key to long-term success.
Consistency in Daily Life
Let's take a look at how consistency plays a role in different aspects of life:
Health and Fitness
Do you go to the gym once and expect to see results? Of course not. Staying healthy requires a consistent routine of exercise and healthy eating. These lifelong pursuits demand regular, dedicated effort to yield the long-term benefits and rewards you seek.
Skill Development
I want to share a story about a friend of mine, Jim Brogan. I met him 15 years ago at the National Pitching Association, an organization led by Tom House, known as the "father of all mechanics." Jim, a former NBA player, talked about his consistent practice regimen. From seventh grade, he would wake up every morning and shoot 500 shots, and then, if he didn't have practice, he would shoot 500 more after school. He maintained this routine throughout his NBA career. This added up to 1,000 shots a day, 6,000 shots a week, and 24,000 shots a month. Such consistency helped him excel and play against legends like Michael Jordan.
Professional Excellence
Consistency is also crucial in professional development. As a young aspiring pitcher, I studied Nolan Ryan's pitching mechanics. Ryan was renowned for his consistent workouts, no matter his schedule. If his plane left at 5 a.m., he would work out at 3 a.m. His unwavering dedication contributed to his legendary career and many records that remain unbroken.
Practical Applications of Consistency
In my coaching sessions, I emphasize the importance of consistent practice. For example, I teach my pitchers a knee drill to improve their technique. I encourage them to practice 30 repetitions daily, which only takes about five minutes. Over time, these small, consistent efforts add up.
Daily Practice: 30 reps a day, 150 reps a week, 600 reps a month, and 7,800 reps a year.
Long-Term Impact: Over five years, this amounts to 37,000 extra repetitions on a specific skill.
Who will excel on the mound? The pitcher who consistently practices. This principle applies to all areas of life. Consistent daily effort, even if small, is far more effective than sporadic, intensive practice.
The Ripple Effect of Consistency
Imagine waking up an hour earlier each day. Spend 30 minutes exercising and 30 minutes studying something of value. Over five years, this consistent effort can profoundly impact your physical health and knowledge.
